The UK Immigration System has been in the news recently as the Government plans to make several reforms. One of these changes is the introduction of the new Graduate Route which will be opening up from 1st July this year.

A number of years ago there was a visa category known as the Post Study Work visa, which many students found useful to switch to at the end of their studies. It was withdrawn in 2012 by Theresa May but the re-introduction of a very similar route was announced back in 2019.

Further details of the new Graduate Visa have now been given and it will open up to international students from later this summer. Applications can be submitted from 1st July onwards and are for individuals currently in the UK on Tier 4 student visas, who wish to work in the UK after completion of their studies. They must currently be undertaking study at Bachelor’s Degree level or above and have a good compliance record for their current studies.

With this new route it is hoped and envisaged that the UK can retain talented international individuals who will in turn contribute to the economy and society here.  Applicants, if successful, will be able to work in the UK for 2 years, ( or 3 years for PhD/ Doctorate level Students).

Unlike the more stringent Skilled Worker category, Applicants do not need a minimum salary or to have Sponsorship from an employer for the Graduate Route and will therefore have more work flexibility. They can work within in any sector and can even be self-employed.

Earlier this year the Minister for Future Borders and Immigration Kevin Foster said:

“As we rebuild from the global pandemic we want the world’s brightest talent, who aspire to a career at the highest levels of business, science, the arts and technology to see our United Kingdom as the natural place to fulfil their aspirations.”
