The whole world is trying to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic, but no more so at present than India who are currently struggling greatly. Whilst it is in all our minds for that very fact, we must not forget the huge amount of young talent the country has to offer and the benefits that bright, educated international graduates can bring to our economy once the world opens up once more for migration.

At the start of May this year our Government and India signed an agreement regarding migration, dealing with a variety of points but most pertinently with a view to assistance and cooperation with immigration crime and the removal of illegal migrants, in exchange perhaps, for a more flexible approach on temporary migration, namely a youth-mobility style scheme. However, this is the first scheme of its kind for a visa-national country (countries which require visit visas in order to visit the UK).

The new route is known as the Young Professionals Route and is for Indian Nationals between the ages of 18-30 to come and work in the UK for a period of up to 2 years. The scheme is reciprocal, so young British Citizens can apply to do the same over in India.

The scheme has a cap of just 3000 places per year but it is not yet clear how this is to be allocated. Applicants must:

  • hold a diploma/degree (at least three years’ higher education) or have professional experience of comparable level.
  • be able to express themselves in the language(s) of the host country
  • Will be subject to the criteria defined by the host country.

It is understood that individuals may be able to continue living and working in the host country at the end of the 2 year period, if they obtain employment that meets the relevant immigration requirements for that country and apply for an extension of leave in the appropriate category.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said:

The UK Government is committed to deliver an immigration system that offers clear opportunities to the brightest and best talent from India and around the world to come to the UK to study, work and live. This ground-breaking new partnership with India is an important milestone in delivering on that commitment.

It will give greater freedom and opportunity to thousands of young people in the UK and India wanting to experience each other’s cultures, whilst also ensuring that we can work together to protect the vast majority of Indian nationals who do play by the rules.

Further details are awaited regarding the scheme’s implementation. For assistance with making such an application, please contact Melissa Southall m.southall@sydneymitchell.co.uk or Andre Minnaar a.minnaar@sydneymitchell.co.uk on 08081668827
