Failure to make the workplace a safe environment recently led to two owners of a haulage firm – described by the Crown Prosecution Service prosecutor as showing ‘utterly reckless management’ and ‘consistent disregard for the health and safety of their employees and the wider public’ – being convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison.

The father and son were held responsible for the death of an employee driver who had fallen asleep at the wheel on a motorway in 2010, having driven for more than the maximum time legally permitted in the previous 24 hours.

The pair also admitted to offences of cheating HM Revenue and Customs of more than £1.6 million in taxes.

Failure to implement and enforce appropriate safety standards at work can lead to more than a fine.
