The Skilled Worker visa has replaced the previous Tier 2 (General) work visa.

The skilled worker route provides for applicants who have a job offer in the UK, to make an application to take up such employment in the UK. It is possible to switch in country to this type of visa in certain categories or otherwise the application can be made from abroad.

Employing individuals through the skilled worker visa scheme is a complex process, involving numerous procedures, which must be followed precisely in order to comply with immigration legislation.

You will need to meet the Eligibility criteria:

  • have a certificate of sponsorship reference number from the employer who holds a sponsorship licence ( or must first apply for one)
  • your job is eligible for this visa
  • earn the appropriate salary for the type of work you will do
  • have the required level of English
  • have enough money for your maintenance (living costs) in the UK for 1 month unless you have already lived in the UK for 12 months or more

Since the EU route closed on 31 Dec 2020, EU nationals can no longer apply to stay in the UK using the free movement route. From 1 Jan 2021, all EU citizens like all other foreign nationals, must use the normal British Immigration rules, including the skilled worker route, to work in the UK.

Before being able to sponsor skilled workers to come and work in the UK, the employer needs to have a Sponsorship licence approved by UKVI.

Dependents:

Eligible dependents can also apply to join you on the skilled worker route and if eligible and successful, their visa will end on the same date as yours.

Eligible dependents are:

  • A spouse, civil partner or unmarried partner
  • children under 18
  • children over 18 if they are already in the UK as a dependant
