Merry Christmas from all at Syndey Mitchell LLP

Leading Midlands Law Firm Sydney Mitchell Solicitors has been recogised by Cancer Research UK after facilitating over £2.9million worth of gifts from people choosing to leave a legacy to the charity in their will.

£2.9m legacy gifts from Sydney Mitchell LLP clientsTracy Creed and the private client team at Sydney Mitchell Solicitors were presented with a gold certificate to acknowledge the firms ongoing support. The firm has been offering the Free Will Service to people aged 55 and over in Shirley, Sheldon and Birmingham for the past 20 years, giving advice and support for those wishing to write a will or update an existing one.

As part of the service, Sydney Mitchell Solicitors give guidance for those wishing to leave a legacy gift for Cancer Research UK.

The charity receives no government funding for its research and relies heavily on the generosity of people leaving gifts in their wills. Over a third of its research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer is funded through supporters leaving a legacy to the charity.

Tracy Creed, Partner and Head of Wills Trusts and Probate commented,

We are so pleased to have been able to support this excellent charity in the knowledge that the research into cancer is helping so many people. It is amazing the amount of money that our clients have promised over the years.  Cancer Research UK does so much to develop cancer treatments that can only happen with the generosity and support of the public.

A legacy gift can be anything someone wishes to leave in their will. Traditionally this is money but it could be anything that has a monetary value like an estate or specific item. Anything left to Cancer Research UK can be marked to be ring-fenced for research into a specific cancer type or research within a local area.

Clare Moore, Director of Legacies at Cancer Research UK, explained:

We all reach a stage at some point in our lives where we start to look ahead and consider what will happen to our financial affairs in the future, when we may no longer be around.

At Cancer Research UK, we work with a number of local solicitors including Sydney Mitchell Solicitors to offer local people aged 55 or over the chance to make an all-important first will or to update an existing one. The service has grown in popularity over the past couple of years and while it is provided free of any obligation, the vast majority of people choose to kindly leave a gift to the charity.

By offering Cancer Research UK’s Free Will Service, Sydney Mitchell Solicitors has become well informed about our work and are very supportive of our life-saving research. Whenever their clients express a desire to support us, Sydney Mitchell Solicitors staff act with great sensitivity as they explain the various options and allow individuals or families to make the right choice in their own good time.

It’s quite astonishing to think that by simply combining enthusiasm with the highest professional standards Sydney Mitchell Solicitors have helped secure over £2.9million worth of legacy gifts, which will go a long way towards helping our scientists, doctors and nurses to beat cancer sooner.

Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. Every step taken by its doctors, nurses and scientists relies on donations from the public and the kindness of supporters who choose to leave a gift in their will.

The Free Will Service has been running successfully for over 20 years across a network of solicitors in the UK. Anyone who wishes to use the service is asked to consider leaving a legacy gift to Cancer Research UK but is under no obligation to do so.

For more information about leaving a legacy gift and Cancer Research UK’s free will service, visit www.cruk.org/freewillservice  or call Sydney Mitchell Solicitors 0121 746 3300

Sydney Mitchell Charity Golf raises £2600 for charity - 3rd Place - Sydney Mitchell Fahmida Ismail TeamA glorious sunny but windy day saw our highly skilled golfers raise a fantastic £2600 for local Midlands’ charities. Ladbrook Park Golf Course was in excellent condition with Midway Care Group winning the competition.

Eastcote Wealth Management came in a very close 2nd place and Fahmida Ismail’s Sydney Mitchell team in 3rd place.  It was an exciting completion with Mulligans, Jokers and a yellow ball thrown in to keep players on their toes.

Freedom Technical won the Yellow Ball competition; the longest drive was won by Andy Chubb of Insol Group and the nearest to the pin winner was Richard Hales of Green Office Technologies.  Unfortunately no one won the £5000 Hole in One Prize on the 12th however Angela Harrison was the first to get on the green with an impressive drive.

Our two Midlands’ charities will benefit from the £2600 raised on the day; Age UK Solihull* and the Buddy Bags Foundation**.

Div Singh, Senior Partner at Sydney Mitchell commented:

All players showed their generosity in supporting the fundraising and a special thank you to Automated Systems Group who sponsored the 18th hole and to Ladbrook Golf Club for donating a four-ball for the raffle.  £935 was raised from the mulligans and raffles alone.  It is great to be able to raise much needed funds for Age UK Solihull and the Buddy Bag Foundation.

Lorraine Hart of Age UK Solihull commented:

We are really grateful to Sydney Mitchell for organising the Charity Golf Day and would like to thank everyone who supported this event and for selecting Age UK Solihull for their charity this year.  Everyone needs help in later life, and it is great to be able to give that much needed support to older people in the Solihull Borough.

Alison Bird of the Buddy Bag Foundation, added:

The Buddy Bag foundation was set up to help children fleeing violent situations, often having to leave home quickly, without the chance to collect basic items.  Often children arrive in emergency accommodation with just the clothes they are wearing.  Every penny raised by charity goes to creating the Buddy bags that are given to children affected by situations beyond their Control.  Each bag costs £25 and contains the basic toiletries, pyjamas, socks, underwear, book, picture frame and a small teddy bear to provide a little comfort for them.

We thank the generosity of the players and Sydney Mitchell for supporting our Charity.

A Birmingham-based personal injury lawyer is hoping to avoid receiving injuries of his own when he takes part in a charity white collar boxing tournament.

Adam Hodson, Solicitor, Personal Injury Department Sydney Mitchell LLPAdam Hodson, a personal injury solicitor with Sydney Mitchell, secretly signed up in January to embark upon a strict and gruelling 12-week training program, culminating in a one-on-one boxing match at Pryzm Nightclub on Broad Street on Friday 23rd March.

Adam said,

It has been intense. I have never boxed before, and this has been quite literally one of the hardest and most demanding things I have ever had to face. From 4.00am starts and all-weather runs; to lung-crushing intensive gym sessions; to gruelling sparring sessions – it has been an epic journey for me, and one that has taught me a lot about myself. I have had amazing support from family, friends and colleagues, and I am looking forward to stepping into the ring on Friday in the name of raising money for charity.

Adam has managed to raise £1000 through fundraising via Just Giving, and is donating the money to support LoveBrum, which is a registered charity that supports hidden gem projects across Birmingham that are often volunteer led and that deliver real change, with outcomes that can be seen, measured, enjoyed, and loved.  LoveBrum supports the ‘hard-to-reach’ projects; causes that are not pro led, or do not receive the platform, and funding, that they probably deserve. They aim to support 12 projects per year, and to reach out to all corners of Birmingham.

Head of Litigation at Sydney Mitchell, Dean Parnell, said:

Punching hard and well above his weight…

We are with Adam every step of the way.  All Partners and Staff at Sydney Mitchell wish him well in the ring!

For anyone wishing to donate to Adam’s fundraising, you can donate via https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/adam-hodson2

Tickets are available at the venue at a costs of £25 per standing ticket. Doors open at 6.30pm, and a full evening of boxing will commence at 7.15pm and is scheduled to end at 10.30pm.

Sydney Mitchell specialist teams include employment, commercial property, company and commercial services, litigation and insolvency. Private client teams include family law, residential property, dispute resolution and wills and probate, contentious probate, tax and trusts and personal injury.

Fantastic result for Adam - winning his boxing tournament and raising £1058 for Charity.  Well done Adam!
