Which English Language Test is the Correct One?
Proving your English Language ability is a key requirement in the majority of UK immigration visa applications, unless one of the following apply:
- You are a national of an English-majority speaking country; or
- Over the age of 65 or under the age of 18; or
- You are exempt due to medical reasons.
It is important to note that not every English language test is suitable for every application, and in fact, sitting the wrong test even at the right level, could result in your visa application being refused.
This is because the Home Office requires English language tests to come from an approved provider, at an approved test centre, and for the test to be a Secure English Language Test (SELT).
See the below link for the Home Office information on approved tests:
These tests are specifically designed to combat cheating and instances of false identities being used, so it is important to remember to bring your valid ID to the test! Some test providers offer alternative tests for other reasons, such as to prove your English Language for study or employment. It is very important that the test you select is UKVI-approved, as often the academic or general version will not be sufficient for the Home Office, regardless of the score.
An English language test is primarily valid for 2 years, and can sometimes be used again if the Home Office accepted it in a previous visa application. However, you must be certain that your certificate has not been withdrawn, and the test provider is still on the Home Office list of approved providers.
There are also different tests to take depending on your visa. For example, if you enter the UK on a family visa, the required level for you to pass is lower than a test for a work visa or British citizenship. An English language test for a work visa would also include different elements, such as assessing your reading and writing skills, in addition to speaking and listening skills. You can find practise tests available on the approved test providers websites to help you prepare.
What Happens If I Take the Wrong Test?
In some instances, the Home Office will write to you and let you know that your test certificate does not meet their requirements. They will not tell you what the correct test to take is, or where to take it. They can give you an opportunity, around 10 working days, to sit another test and provide them with a new certificate.
English Language tests can cost around £160 depending on which provider you use. In order to avoid setbacks or even an application refusal, it is important to understand the application requirements for your specific visa.
