The Global Talent Visa in the UK is a unique immigration category aimed at attracting exceptionally skilled individuals from across the globe to contribute to the UK’s workforce. This visa is intended for those over the age of 18 who are either established leaders or promising future leaders in various fields.
These fields include academia or research, encompassing science, medicine, engineering, humanities, and social sciences. It also covers arts and culture, which includes combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, visual arts, architecture, fashion design, film, and television, such as animation, post-production, and visual effects. Additionally, the visa targets the digital technology sector, incorporating financial technology (fintech), gaming, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence.
What your options?
You can apply from outside of the UK or from within the UK and switch from another visa category where switching is permitted.
There are two ways to apply:
- Firstly, if you have won a prize in your field and it is recognised by UKVI on their list of eligible prestigious prizes, you can apply directly.
- Otherwise, you will firstly need to obtain endorsement from an approved endorsing body.
A list of the current endorsing bodies can be found on the UKVI website. It is advisable to check this first before considering an application:
You can apply for endorsement as a leader, those with exceptional talent, or as a potential leader, those with exceptional promise. The criteria and documentation required are different for each and also for each of the three main fields of academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology.
Once you have an endorsement you can then apply for the visa. You will need to pay the relevant fee as well as the immigration health surcharge. Your dependant partner and children can also apply if eligible.
Following a successful application
If your visa application is successful, you will be given leave to remain in the UK for a period of between one to five years and can apply for an extension as many times as necessary, as long as you meet the eligibility criteria and your endorsement, or the prize has not been withdrawn.
You will also be required to show with documentary evidence that you earned money in your expert field.
It is possible to apply for settlement but the time frame for when this is possible depends upon the type of visa and endorsement.
