Over 200 people attended the inaugural Sydney Mitchell Charity Ball held at the National Motorcycle Museum, raising over £3,500 for two local charities; the Maria Watt Foundation and the Birmingham Women’s Hospital Neonatal unit.  The firm decided to mark the Birmingham Law Society Legal Awards win and its 250 years in business by raising funds for charity and this latest fundraising event keeps them well on track to meet their target of £10,000 for the year.

Karen Moores, Partner, Sydney Mitchell opened the evening with an appeal for the charities; thanking everyone for attending and for their generosity over the evening.

 Dean Parnell, Partner, Sydney Mitchell was master of ceremonies for the night and kept the lively event moving along all night.  Everyone enjoyed the evening and entertainment included dancing to a live 7 piece band, casino tables and a prize-laden tombola.

 Karen Moores added “We have received great support from the professional community in our fundraising efforts over the year and all of our hardworking team at Sydney Mitchell. We received many generous tombola and raffle prizes from our guests and local businesses including a gourmet break for two at the Manor Hotel Meriden, meal for two at Purnell’s and champagne from Handelsbanken.”

Sydney Mitchell’s chosen charities for 2013 are the Tiny Babies Appeal for Birmingham Women’s Hospital raising funds for specialist neonatal equipment and the Maria Watt Foundation raising funds for teenagers and children with cancer.   

The Maria Watt Foundation is a local charity whose aim is to promote understanding about leukaemia and other cancers that affect children, teenagers and young adults.  This was set up in 2005 by Diane Watt after the tragic loss of her daughter Maria who had planned to go to university to become a lawyer.

The Birmingham Women’s Hospital Neonatal "Tiny Babies, Big Appeal" is the Neonatal appeal at Birmingham Women's Hospital. All donations will help care for sick and premature babies, not just in Birmingham but throughout the West Midlands.

Maria Watt Foundation raises funds to support specific projects such as the recent development of a Teenage Cancer Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.  They are also actively involved in raising awareness of the early signs of childhood cancer working with schools and GPs.  Support is also given to the Beads of Courage Programme which helps to decrease illness related stress through using positive coping strategies to help children suffering serious illness.
